Images of Britain: Former Pier 8 of Manchester Docks, Salford Quays, Manchester

The former Pier 8 of Manchester Docks, now part of Salford Quays, Greater Manchester, was one of the biggest urban regeneration developments of the late 20th century in the UK. The Lowry, a major arts centre, was one of the first projects.
The Lowry opened in 2000 and has three theatre spaces. These are the 1,730-capacity Lyric Theatre, the 466-seat Quays and the more intimate Studio. The major art gallery houses a collection of the paintings by locally-born artist L. S. Lowry (1887-1976). Temporary, touring exhibitions also present in other galleries.
Pier Eight is the name of The Lowry's restaurant and bar overlooking the dock.
Hotel Football next to Old Trafford Stadium is a recommended place to stay in this part of Manchester. Other popular hotels include the five-star Lowry Hotel, the four-star, city center Holiday Inn Manchester, the Holiday Inn Hotel Media City and the Hilton Manchester Deansgate.
