Churches in the UK: A-Z Listing of Places of Worship

Canterbury Cathedral, Canterbury, UK
Canterbury Cathedral

Christianity first came to the British Isles during the Roman period of history. It was one of the many cults that thrived in the Roman Empire of the time. In 331 AD the Emperor Constantine legalized Christianity which put an end to previous persecutions of Christians.

After the end of the Roman period in Britain and successive invasions by Angles, Jutes and Saxons, Christianity was pushed to the margins of Britain, surviving mainly in Celtic Scotland, Wales and Ireland.

The mission of Augustine in 597 to King Aethelbert of Kent marks the connection between the religion and the state, which continues to this day.

Britain's oldest, existing churches date from around this period including the UNESCO World Heritage listed Church of St. Martin in Canterbury, which is said to have the longest continuous history as a parish church in England.

There are over 40,000 church buildings in the UK about 1,000 more than the number of pubs. The majority of churches in Britain are Anglican at around 16,000.

This listing includes other places of worship including Islamic mosques, Buddhist, Hindu and Jain temples and other sacred spaces such as Avebury and Stonehenge.
