The tomb of Anne Stanhope, Duchess of Somerset (c.1510-1587) lies in the St Nicholas' chapel in Westminster Abbey, central London.
Her tomb consists of her alabaster effigy depicted in red ermine robes wearing a coronet.
Anne Seymour, Duchess of Somerset, was an English noblewoman who lived during the 16th century. She was born Anne Stanhope, and her life was marked by her association with the powerful Seymour family and her roles in the English court. Anne was born around 1510, the daughter of Sir Edward Stanhope and Elizabeth Bourchier. Her family was well-connected in the English aristocracy.
She married Edward Seymour, 1st Earl of Hertford, around 1520. Edward Seymour was the eldest brother of Jane Seymour, who later became the third wife of King Henry VIII.
Through this royal connection, Anne and Edward Seymour became prominent figures at the court of King Henry VIII. Edward's sister Jane became the queen when she married Henry VIII in 1536. This marriage elevated the Seymours' status at court.
After the death of King Henry VIII in 1547, Edward Seymour became the Lord Protector for his nephew, the young King Edward VI. Edward Seymour became Duke of Somerset, and Anne became the Duchess of Somerset. However, Edward's political power was short-lived, and he was eventually arrested and executed in 1552.
Following Edward's death, Anne married married Francis Newdigate (d. 26 January 1582) of Hanworth, who had been steward to her late husband.
Seymour outlived both of her husbands. She died at Hanworth Palace in 1587, and was buried in Westminster Abbey.
