A photo of the derelict Battersea Power Station taken in 2012, 34 years after having been decommissioned. Built in 1930, a second, almost identical power station was added to the original in the 1950s, thus creating the iconic structure. With four chimneys it is one of the largest brick buildings in the world and the largest brick structure in Europe.

It became a world-wide icon after being used on the cover of the Pink Floyd album "Animals" in 1977. Plans to redevelop the site went through many changes including making it into a theme park but all came to naught and in 2012 the site was put on the open market. However, as the buildings had now become a grade II listed site there were many restrictions on any development plans, including the retention of the four chimneys.

Many parts of the redevelopment have now been completed, including the opening of a shopping mall inside the former turbine hall. As well as retail spaces the complex also includes luxury flats and office space as well as entertainment spaces. Read more.
