ULEZ is a British acronym for Ultra Low Emission Zone. Since August 2023 it has extended across all London boroughs.
Ultra Low Emission Zones were introduced in stages beginning with central London in 2019.
Vehicles entering the ULEZ must meet strict emission standards for nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM). Non-compliant vehicles face charges.
The daily charge for non-compliant cars and motorcycles is presently £12.50 (2024). Owners of non-UK registered vehicles also need to meet the ULEZ emissions standards or pay the daily charge to drive within the zone.
The money raised from the ULEZ is invested in the transport network as well as other measures to reduce air pollution in the capital.
The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, including weekends and holidays with the exception of December 25 (Christmas Day).
The scheme is a divisive political issue in the UK.
