London Boroughs

Greater London is a ceremonial county. It consists of 32 local authority districts each with a town hall or civic centre.

The boroughs were created by Act of Parliament in 1965. 12 are designated as Inner London boroughs and 20 as Outer London boroughs.

The historic centre of the capital, the City of London is a separate county but together with the others forms the Greater London region, governed from City Hall.

Inner Boroughs

The 12 Inner London boroughs are Camden, Greenwich, Hackney, Hammersmith and Fulham, Islington, Kensington and Chelsea, Lambeth, Lewisham, Southwark, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth and Westminster.

Royal Boroughs

Three London boroughs are designated as Royal Boroughs. These are Greenwich, Kensington and Chelsea and Kingston upon Thames. Greenwich was designated as a Royal Borough to mark the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012. Kensington and Chelsea commemorates the birth of Queen Victoria in Kensington Palace and Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames was the coronation place of King Æthelstan in the 10th century.
