London is widely regarded as one of the most verdant cities on earth, distinguished by its extensive network of green spaces which make up around 40% of the city's area.

Royal Parks

Central to this system are the city's eight Royal Parks, which collectively cover approximately 20 square kilometers. Historically serving as royal hunting grounds, these parks are now accessible to the public at no cost, offering a significant contribution to London's urban landscape and recreational opportunities. The eight Royal Parks are Bushy Park, Green Park, Greenwich Park, Hyde Park, Kensington Gardens, Regent's Park, Richmond Park, and St James's Park. Five are in central London with Bushy Park, Greenwich Park, and Richmond Park on the periphery of the city.

Other Green Spaces in London

In addition, it is estimated there are 3,000 parks and gardens in the capital with a total area of 35,000 acres.

Numerous smaller green spaces in central London take the form of garden squares, originally designed for the exclusive use of residents in affluent neighborhoods. However, in some instances, these spaces have since been made accessible to the public.

Beyond these spaces, numerous council-owned parks were established between the mid-19th century and the Second World War. These include Alexandra Park, Battersea Park, Brockwell Park, Crystal Palace Park, and Victoria Park.

Common Land

Areas that were common land or former common land often later became public parks. These include Clapham Common, Tooting Commons, Wandsworth Common and Wimbledon Common.
