Manchester's Metrolink is the UK's largest light rail system, serving Greater Manchester with an extensive network of tram routes. First opened in 1992, it was the first modern tram system in Britain and was developed to link Manchester's main railway stations while improving public transport across the region.

Initially operating with a single line connecting Bury and Altrincham via the city center, the network has expanded significantly over the years, with new routes added to serve areas such as Eccles, Ashton-under-Lyne, Rochdale, and East Didsbury.

One of the most significant expansions was the Second City Crossing, completed in 2017, which improved tram capacity through Manchester's center. Today, Metrolink operates on a network of over 100 kilometers (62 miles) with nine main lines, including routes to Manchester Airport, MediaCityUK, and the Trafford Centre.

The system runs frequently, with trams typically arriving every 6-12 minutes, making it a vital transport link for commuters, residents, and visitors. Unlike traditional train networks, Metrolink trams run on both on-street tracks and old railway corridors, blending well into Manchester's urban landscape. As the city continues to grow, Metrolink remains central to its transport strategy, with future plans for further expansion and improvements.
