History

The church is the work of architect John Nash (1752-1835) and is in Bath stone. It was completed in 1824 and is a famous landmark in this part of London.

Nash was a favorite architect of King George IV. Some of his other famous commissions include the Royal Pavilion in Brighton and both Marble Arch and Buckingham Palace in London. The building is Nash's last surviving church.

Its distinct circular stone portico (rotunda) with a conical spire was designed by Nash to handle an awkward curve in the road layout at the top of Regent Street.

There are said and sung Eucharist services on Sundays as well as services on weekdays.

Post World War II Changes

The church was damaged by bombing during World War II and was closed for a decade as repairs overseen by architect Harry Goodhart-Rendel were carried out. The church reopened in 1951.

Much of Rendel's work was changed by further refurbishment between 1975 and 1976.

As the building had originally been built on swampy ground, Nash's foundations went deep and a new basement was excavated under the church to provide a church hall/meeting space. The floor of the church was also raised which has the effect of the windows appearing at a low height. The fixed pews were also removed and replaced with moveable tables and chairs.
