Arbroath's Seaton Cliffs are a spectacular natural attraction just outside the small town of Arbroath on the east coast of Scotland, north of Dundee.

Walking the path along the top of the cliffs affords some stunning views of the Angus coastline and out along the North Sea.

The signposted trail extends 5 km all the way along the coast to the village of Auchmithie to the north. It is also possible to explore the coastline on a kayak tour from Arbroath.

Geology

The rocks were formed in two different ages, 410 million years ago (Lower Devonian) and 370 million years ago (Upper Devonian).

The red sandstone cliffs now contain several caves, collapsed caves and stunning rock formations of interest such as The Deil's Heid, Dickmont's Den, Mermaid's Kirk, and Needles E'e.

Wildlife

The cliffs and the surrounding area provide a natural habitat for various seabirds, including puffins, guillemots, and kittiwakes. Dolphins can also sometimes be seen in the sea.

Access

Access to the walking path is from the car park at the end of Victoria Park. There is a useful map for guidance here.

The nearest railway station to the trail is Arbroath Station, around 20 minutes away on foot. It is on the line from Aberdeen to Dundee Station. The fastest trains take about 20 minutes between Dundee and Arbroath.

From Glasgow, Arbroath is about 2 hours by train and around 90 minutes from Edinburgh.

There are local buses running between Arbroath and Auchmithie if you don't want to walk back. There are also buses from Seaton Bus Station in Dundee to Arbroath.

Located on South Union Street Dundee Station has trains to London King's Cross Station from Aberdeen via Edinburgh, Newcastle and York Station in York as well as more local ScotRail trains to Glasgow Queen Street in Glasgow via Perth and Stirling as well as connections south to Edinburgh Waverley Station in Edinburgh.

In addition to walking along Arbroath's Seaton cliffs, other attractions in and around the lively town of Arbroath include Arbroath Abbey, Arbroath Harbour, the nearby Signal Tower Museum, and attractive Auchmithie up the coast, known as the home of the Arbroath Smokie. The local football team, Arbroath FC play at Gayfield Park near the marina and Pleasureland amusement park.
