Buxton Station in Buxton in the northwest of England is on the Buxton Line. The Buxton Line connects Manchester Piccadilly Station in Manchester and the spa town of Buxton in Derbyshire, close to the Peak District National Park.

History

The present Buxton Station dates back to 1863. At first there were two stations built side by side. One operated by the the Stockport, Disley and Whaley Bridge Railway and the other by Midland Railway. The latter closed in 1967. The station frontages with their distinctive fan windows were designed by Sir Joseph Paxton (1803-1865), once head gardener at nearby Chatsworth House, an MP and the cultivator of the Cavendish banana.

The station is now well-known for its original art pieces which can be found both inside and outside the station. They include Arnemetia by Suzanne Pearson, a mosaic by local artist Jo Spencer and 'Joe' - a sculpture of a guard made by artist Andy Hill from scrap metal and named in honor of comedian Alexei Sayle's dad, Joseph Henry, who worked as a guard on the railways.

Trains & Platforms

Nowadays Buxton Station has 2 platforms with trains to and from Manchester Piccadilly. Previously some Northern Line trains went as far as Blackpool North but this is no longer the case.

The 15 stations on the Buxton Line are Manchester Piccadilly, Levenshulme, Heaton Chapel, Stockport Station, Davenport, Woodsmoor, Hazel Grove, Middlewood, Disley, New Mills Newtown, Furness Vale, Whaley Bridge, Chapel-en-le-Frith, Dove Holes and the terminus, Buxton.

Station Facilities

Buxton Station has 24/7 car parking with spaces for 53 cars (including accessible spaces) as well as parking for 24 bicycles.

The ticket office is open at the following times:

Monday to Saturday: 5.50 am to 8 pm; Sunday 8.15 am 10.30 pm.

There is no Lost Property Office at the station.

Other facilities at the station include pay phones, dementia-friendly signage and public toilets.

Buses

Local buses leave from outside the station on Station Road.

These include the 199 to Manchester Airport, 030 (Dove Holes - Buxton Community College), 58 (Macclesfield), 65 (Tideswell), 77 (Buxton Circular), 185 (Burlow), 186 (Fairfield), 190 to Whaley Bridge, 441 (Ashbourne - Newhaven - Buxton), 442 (Ashbourne - Hartington - Buxton) and Transpeak to Derby.

Accommodation

Buxton has some great places to stay to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere and the town's lively festivals.

As well as the five-star Ensana Buxton Crescent Hotel and the historic Old Hall Hotel, try the Portland Hotel, the Palace Hotel or the Best Western Plus Buxton Lee Wood Hotel.

The Portland Hotel offers traditional furnishings and a full English breakfast. The Palace Hotel dates from Victorian times and includes a swimming pool and a restaurant. The Westminster Hotel overlooks the Pavilion Gardens and is a family-run establishment.
