Grade I Listed Huddersfield Station
Beautiful Huddersfield Station in Huddersfield in the north of England is one of the country's most beautiful railway stations. It is the main point of access for visitors to this pleasant, underrated town in the Kirklees district of West Yorkshire.
History
The present Huddersfield Station dates back to 1846-50. It has a classical-style facade, with Corinthian portico of 12 columns.
The station was designed by architect James Pigott Pritchett who also designed the nearby St Peter's Church.
A statue of locally-born former Prime Minister Harold Wilson stands in front of the station. Unveiled by Tony Blair in 1999, the larger than life 2.5 meter bronze statue is by sculptor, Ian Walters. The work shows Wilson without his trademark pipe, at the request of his wife, Mary, who believed it would make the statue a caricature. Based on photographs taken in 1964, the statue is a major landmark in St George's Square outside the station.
More famous still than former Labour politicians are the station cats - Felix and Bolt. Felix was Senior Pest Controller and had been working at the station since 2011. Bolt joined her in 2018. Unfortunately, Felix passed away aged 12 in December 2023.
Trains & Platforms
Nowadays Huddersfield Station has 6 platforms with trains to many parts of the north of England.
In general trains to the following destinations depart from each platform.
Platform 1 has services to Manchester Piccadilly and Manchester Airport in Manchester as well as Liverpool (via Manchester Victoria).
Platform 2 has local trains to Sheffield.
Platform 4 has stopping trains to Leeds (4a) and Manchester Piccadilly (4b) via Stalybridge Station. (One evening train from Hull terminates at Platform 4a).
Platforms 5 and 6 has local trains to/from Bradford Interchange via Halifax and Wakefield Kirkgate.
Platform 8 has express departures to Leeds, Hull, York Station in York, Scarborough, Middlesbrough and Newcastle.
As of 31 July, 2023, Huddersfield has had over 5,500 scheduled trains cancelled in the year so far - the highest rate in the UK at 13%.
Station Facilities
Huddersfield Station has 24/7 car parking with spaces for 28 cars as well as parking for 54 bicycles at the Cycle Hub storage facility on Platform 1.
The ticket office is open at the following times:
Monday - Friday 5.45 am - 8 pm; Saturday 5.45 am - 8 pm; Sunday 7.45 am - 8 pm.
There is no Lost Property Office at the station.
Other facilities at the station include ATM's, pay phones, Wifi, a post box and public toilets.
There are even two pubs at the station. These are the Head of Steam and the King's Head (formerly The Station Tavern).
There is a taxi rank just outside the main entrance. Waiting time for a cab is minimal.
Close to the station are St Peter's Parish Church, Huddersfield Library & Art Gallery and Huddersfield Open Market.
Buses
Local Huddersfield buses leave from St George's Square.
These include the 202 Max to Halifax and Leeds, the 299 Sapphire and the FTB.
The Huddersfield FreeCityBus connects the station with the bus station on Upperhead Row, as well as the University of Huddersfield and other areas in the town.
Hotels
Close to the station is the Stay Hotel. The more upmarket Cedar Court Hotel is a little out of town near the M62 motorway. The Plumbers Arms is a guest house with flat-screen TV and en suite bathrooms.
