Close to the Town Hall, Coronor's Court and Stockport War Memorial Art Gallery on the A6 in Stockport, Greater Manchester is a memorial to James Conway, a Royal Marine killed in World War II.
The so-called 'Cockleshell Hero' was a 20-year-old former milkman from Stockport who took part on a raid along with 11 fellow commandos on the Nazi-occupied port of Bordeaux in France in December 1942.
Just two men survived the mission known as Operation Frankton remembered in the book Cockleshell Heroes by Paddy Ashdown.
Conway was executed along with his comrade Lieutenant John Mackinnon by the Gestapo when they were forced to abandon their mission when their canoe was damaged.
Six German vessels were damaged by limpet mines in the raid which involved the commandos paddling more than 80 miles in canoes up the Gironde estuary.
The bronze and steel monument by artist Luke Perry was unveiled in 2017.
