St. Mary's Catholic Church in Derby is a fine example of 19th-century Gothic Revival architecture. It was designed by the renowned architect and Catholic convert Augustus Pugin. It was the first important church design of his short but glittering career.

Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852) is most famous for St. Stephen's Tower now Elizabeth Tower and aka Big Ben as well as the interior of the Houses of Parliament in London.

The church in Derby was completed in 1839 and reflects Pugin's dedication to the principles of the Gothic style, characterized by its pointed arches, ribbed vaults, and intricate tracery. As one of the earliest Catholic churches built in England after the Catholic Emancipation Act of 1829, St. Mary's holds considerable historical importance.

The church's interior features elaborate stained glass windows and a richly adorned altar, reflecting Pugin's belief in the integration of beauty and spirituality.

A Grade II listed building, St Mary's is part of the Diocese of Nottingham and holds daily masses.

Derby's most important church is the Anglican Derby Cathedral. Its crypt contains the remains of Bess of Hardwick and many members of the aristocratic Cavendish family. Outside stands an equestrian statue of Bonnie Prince Charlie.
