The World Cup Heroes Statue, Ashton, Tameside
The World Cup Heroes is a statue by sculptor Andy Edwards that stands outside Tameside Stadium in Ashton-under-Lyne in Greater Manchester, northwest England. The work in bronze was unveiled in 2010.
The plaque reads "This statue stands as a testament to Tameside's place in football history as the birthplace of three men who hold World Cup winner's medals. Sir Geoff Hurst MBE England 1966 (b Ashton 1941). Jimmy Armfield OBE England 1966 (b Denton 1935). Simone Perrotta Italy 2006 (b Ashton 1977)."
Tameside Stadium is the home ground of non-league club Curzon Ashton. It has a capacity of 4,200 with around 500 seats. It can be reached by train to Ashton-under-Lyne Station from both Huddersfield Station and Manchester Victoria. Ashton West Metrolink stop is closer to the stadium and is on the Metrolink from both Manchester Piccadilly and Victoria.
