Tate Britain in London displays the largest collection of works by J. M. W. Turner (1775-1851) in the world.

Among them is this self-portrait by the artist as a young man of 23 or 24 years of age. Confident and successful, Turner appears in the Georgian finery of his day.

The oil painting on canvas depicts the painter on the cusp of fame in celebration of his forthcoming election as an Associate member of the Royal Academy of Arts.

The portrait was used on the reverse side of the £20 note issued in 2020.
