The sculpture is the work of Laurence Broderick, a Bristol-born sculptor. It was unveiled in 2003 as part of the regeneration efforts in the Bull Ring area. It is twice the size of a real bull and is the third most photographed landmark in Britain, after the Houses of Parliament and the London Eye. It has twice been vandalized.

The installation of the Bull statue was part of a broader urban regeneration project aimed at revitalizing the Bull Ring area. The Bullring Shopping Centre, which opened in 2003, played a central role in transforming the district into a major retail and commercial hub.

The iconic work served as an inspiration for the Raging Bull mechanical statue made for the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games. Using materials from factories in Birmingham, the huge mechanical statue was built around a 17-ton forklift crane. It is now on show at Birmingham New Street Station.
