The London Underground logo, known as the roundel, is one of the best-known icons in the British capital.

The simple red, white and blue circle and bar design is one of the most recognizable transport symbols in the world.

First conceived in 1908, the basic design has undergone several modifications over time including the typeface by calligrapher Edward Johnston in 1917.

The roundel appears on London underground stations both outside and within. Outside the sign appears with the word "Underground" to show where the station is located. On platforms, the name of the station itself appears in the bar as in the example below.

Nowadays, different colored versions of the roundel are used for the DLR, the Overground, Trams, River Transport and London Buses etc. Even the Non-Smoking signs inside carriages once used the roundel.
