Statue of the Unknown Highlander

Standing atop the dramatic Glenfinnan Monument at the head of Loch Shiel, the statue is thought by some to be Bonnie Prince Charlie, who raised his banner at this spot to begin what is now known as the Jacobite Uprising of 1745. The monument itself was constructed in 1814 and sculptor John Greenshields was commissioned to make a statue of Bonnie Prince Charlie to go on top of the monument, but the idea was changed for it to be not of the prince, but an anonymous highlander who symbolized all the highlanders who rose and fought in the uprising. The Unknown Highlander was placed on top of the tower in 1835.
