Frome

Frome, a historic market town in Somerset, 13 miles south of Bath, is known for its industrial heritage, arts scene, and independent spirit. Dating back to the Saxon era, Frome flourished during the medieval period as a center for wool and cloth production, later becoming a center for metalworking and printing.

Today, the town retains much of its historic charm, with cobbled streets, medieval and Georgian architecture, and a thriving community of independent businesses.

The famous Catherine Hill (pictured below) is lined with artisan shops, boutiques, and cafés, making it a popular destination for visitors seeking a a feel-good shopping experience.

Frome's lively markets, including the monthly Frome Independent Market, attract thousands of visitors, selling local crafts, vintage goods, and street food.

The town also hosts the annual Frome Festival in July, a ten-day celebration of music, theatre, literature, and visual arts, featuring performances in venues like the Merlin Theatre and the historic Cheese and Grain.

With a reputation for being one of the most progressive and community-driven towns in the UK, Frome has pioneered initiatives like the Flatpack Democracy movement, which encourages grassroots political engagement. Surrounded by beautiful Somerset countryside, the town also offers access to scenic walking trails and nature reserves.
