History

The cathedral was built between 1841 and 1844 making it one of the earliest Catholic churches built in the country after the Catholic Relief Act was passed in 1829.

At the time it was also the largest Catholic place of worship constructed in England since the Reformation in the 1530s.

The church contains the relics of St. Barnabas, brought from Rome.

The architect was Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin (1812-1852). He was responsible for a number of notable buildings in his short life including St George's Cathedral in Southwark and the interior of the Houses of Parliament, both in London. A convert to Catholicism, he was also the architect of St. Chad's Cathedral in Birmingham.

The church is designed in an English Gothic style. However, many of the more ornate features of Pugin's work were unfortunately removed and lost in the 1960s following the contentious doctrinal decisions of the Second Vatican Council.

Two choirs, the Cathedral Choir and Cathedral Youth Choir, have their home in the church which is famous for its music.
