Pleasant Halifax Station in Halifax in Yorkshire in the north of England is the main point of access for visitors to this pleasant, underrated town.
History
The first Halifax Station first opened in 1844. The Grade II listed building opposite Eureka! The National Children's Museum dates from 1855 and was part of the original station and later used as a goods depot. the grand building is now no longer in use.
The present station in Halifax dates from the late 19th century but was refurbished between 2009-2010 following a campaign by a local newspaper.
Trains & Platforms
Nowadays Halifax Station has 2 platforms with trains running on the trans-Pennine Calder Valley Line between Manchester Victoria in Manchester and Leeds. Some trains also continue on to Blackpool North.
In general trains to the following destinations depart from each platform.
Platform 1 has westbound and southbound services to Huddersfield (via Brighouse - which is slightly to the east), Sowerby Bridge, Hebden Bridge, Todmorden, Rochdale, Manchester Victoria and Blackpool North.
Platform 2 has eastbound trains to Bradford and Leeds. Some trains to Leeds continue to York Station in York, and Hull.
There are also trains to London King's Cross in the capital via Wakefield Kirkgate, Pontefract and Doncaster.
Station Facilities
The ticket office is open at the following times:
Monday to Saturday: 5.50 am to 7.50 pm; Sunday: 8.50 am to 7 pm.
There is no Lost Property Office at the station.
Other facilities at the station include Wifi, refreshments and public toilets.
There are 32 parking spaces for cars as well as bicycle storage and bicycle hire facilities.
There is a taxi rank just outside the main entrance. Waiting time for a cab is minimal.
Close to the station are many of the town's sights including The Piece Hall, Calderdale Industrial Museum and Halifax Minster.
Buses
Local Huddersfield buses leave from the Horton Street bus stop.
These include the 561 Calderdale Country to Sowerby Bridge and Ripponden, the 563 to Copley, Rastrick and Brighouse, 563A and S7 to Ryburn Valley High.
The 537, 539, 561 Calderdale Country, 563, 563A and S7 also all stop at the Church Street South Parade bus stop.
Halifax Bus Station is a 15-minute walk north of the railway station.
