Haymarket Station in Edinburgh in Scotland is the second largest and busiest station in the capital after Waverley.

The station serves as both a mainline and tram station for Edinburgh Trams.

Haymarket is about 1.6 km (a mile) west of Edinburgh Castle, 1.3 km south of the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art and 1.6 km of Murrayfield rugby stadium.

History

The original Haymarket Station in Edinburgh was first built in 1842 as the terminus of the Edinburgh and Glasgow Railway. The line extended to Waverley four years later in 1846.

The station itself is a Category A listed building.

The station was redeveloped with the addition of an Ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) roof and was formally reopened in 2013. There is now better access to Murrayfield and improved retail facilities.

There are mainline trains from Haymarket to Glasgow, Bridge Of Allan, Dundee Station in Dundee, Dunfermline, Falkirk, Kingussie, Kirkcaldy, Linlithgow and Perth.

There are also trains to Carlisle, Preston Station (change here for trains to London Euston in London), Manchester Piccadilly, and Manchester Airport in Manchester.

Change at Waverley for intercity services to London King’s Cross via Newcastle, York Station in York, and Birmingham New Street.
