Preston Station in Lancashire in the northwest of England is the main point of rail access to the town and an important railway hub. It is roughly halfway on the West Coast Main Line between Euston Station in London and Glasgow Central in Glasgow.

History

Opened in 1838, the station was originally built as part of the North Union Railway. The current station dates from 1880 and extended in both 1903 and 1913.

Trains

Preston has trains to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street, Blackpool North, Colne, Ormskirk, Barrow-in-Furness, Windermere in the Lake District, Manchester Piccadilly, York Station via Leeds, Manchester Airport, Waverley Station in Edinburgh and Glasgow, among other destinations.

Additionally, there are trains to on the Calder Valley Line to Blackburn, Burnley, Halifax, Leeds and Manchester Victoria in Manchester.

Station Facilities

Preston Station has 24/7 car parking with spaces for 1025 cars as well as parking for bicycles.

The ticket office is open at the following times:

Monday - Friday 5.45 am - 10 pm; Saturday 4.45 am - 9 pm; Sunday 8 am - 10 pm.

There is a taxi rank outside the main entrance. Waiting time for a cab is minimal. The station has shops for refreshments on platforms 3 and 4.

A Leisure Lakes bike shop, sales, hire and services is available adjacent to Platform 7 on Butler Street, outside the Multi-Story car park. There are also 246 spaces available at the station for bicycles.

Buses

Preston's main bus station near Tithebarn Street is less 15 minutes away from the station on foot.

There are buses from Preston Bus Station to various local destinations including Ashton-on-Ribble, Bamber Bridge, Blackburn, Cadley, Earnshaw Bridge, Garstang, Ingol, Lea, Leyland, Newton-with-Scales, Preston North End FC (Deepdale), Wharton and Woodplumpton. From the railway station itself there are buses to Cottam, Elswick, Hesketh Bank, Southport, and Tarleton.

Hotels

Some recommended hotels within easy reach of the station include the 3-star Holiday Inn Preston close to the Preston Bus Station. The Legacy Preston International Hotel is also a 3-star property.

The Claremont Preston is a 3-star property on Blackpool Road.
