Liverpool Lime Street Station in Liverpool in the northwest of England is the main point of access for visitors to this port city. It is a short walk from Albert Dock and many of Liverpool's main tourist attractions and museums.

History

Opened in 1836, the station was originally built as a terminus of the Liverpool and Manchester Railway (L&MR), the world's first inter-city passenger railway, with Liverpool Road Station in Manchester the other terminus. Indeed, Lime Street is the oldest mainline terminus station still in operation in the world.

Its most iconic feature, the vast arched train shed completed in 1867, was, at the time, the largest of its kind in the world, demonstrating the city's industrial ambition and the UK's engineering prowess.

Trains & Platforms

Lime Street is the primary terminus for long-distance services connecting Liverpool to London Euston, Birmingham New Street, and Glasgow, among other destinations.

Additionally, there are trains to Manchester Airport, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Victoria, Sheffield Station in Sheffield, and Chester.

The station also serves regional routes, including trains connecting Liverpool to nearby towns and cities like Wigan, Warrington, and Blackpool.

Additionally, Lime Street is also integrated with the Merseyrail network, offering frequent local services across the Merseyside region on the Wirral Line and Northern Line. Destinations include Liverpool Central, New Brighton, West Kirby, Chester and Ellesmere Port.

Liverpool Lime Street Station has 24/7 car parking with spaces for 280 cars as well as parking for 52 bicycles.

The ticket office is open at the following times:

Monday - Friday 5 am - 11.38 pm; Saturday 5 am - 11.38 pm; Sunday 7.15 am - 11.05 pm.

There is a taxi rank at Skelhorne Street. Waiting time for a cab is minimal. The station concourse has branches of WH Smith, Boots, Costa Coffee and Starbucks.

There are statues of local Scouse heroes, comedian Ken Dodd and MP Bessie Braddock, within the concourse. They were erected in 2009.

Within fairly easy walking distance from the station are several places of interest including St George's Hall, Wellington's Column and the Empire Theatre and Walker Art Gallery.

Buses

Liverpool's main bus station on Roe Street is less than 5 minutes away from the station.

The 10A and City Centre Circular buses (C4 and C5) run to the Liverpool One bus station at Canning Place. From here take the 500 Airport Flyer bus direct to Liverpool John Lennon Airport (LJLA).

Some recommended hotels within easy reach of the station include the 4-star Hilton Liverpool close to the Liverpool One Bus Station. The Liverpool Radisson Red Hotel is also a 4-star property and offers Wifi, a restaurant, and a 24-hour reception adjacent to the station's main entrance.

Holiday Inn Liverpool City Centre is directly opposite the station as is The Liner, a 3-star property on Lord Nelson Street.
