Images of Britain: Lowry Bridge (Salford Quays Footbridge), Manchester

Called the Millennium Bridge by some, and the Lowry Bridge by others, built in 2000 this pedestrian bridge crosses the Manchester Ship Canal in Salford, Greater Manchester.
Designed by Carlos Fernandez Casado, the bridge has a span of 299 feet (91.2 meters) and consists of a pair of arches that connect at their peaks. To enable larger boats to pass the bridge lifts 59 feet (18 meters) in the air in just 3 minutes, though nowadays it is rare for such large vessels to venture so far.
The bridge connects Salford Quays, The Lowry, and MediaCity, on one bank with Trafford Wharf and the Imperial War Museum North on the other. Media City Footbridge is another stunning pedestrian bridge in the district.
