Spinnaker Tower

Spinnaker Tower is noted landmark in Portsmouth Harbour.

The impressive monument which resembles a sail is part of the redevelopment of the area which hosts The National Museum of the Royal Navy where visitors can visit such historic vessels as the Mary Rose, HMS M33, HMS Victory and HMS Warrior.

History

170 meters tall, Spinnaker Tower was finished in 2005 after four years in construction. Its shape was chosen by local residents and the work was partly funded with money from the National Lottery. It can be seen as far away as the Isle of Wight!

The steel structure was designed by local company HGP Architects. It bears some resemblance to the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, UAE.

The observation decks with floor to ceiling glass walls at the top afford superb views over Portsmouth and out to sea. Touch panel screens explain the sights you can sea.

Things to Do

There's plenty to do on any visit to the tower. High teas are served on The Clouds observation deck, there are also comedy club, music and dance nights and the tower can be booked for weddings and other events.

You can also abseil down the tower for £100 per person.

There's a gift shop selling local products and children's toys, too.

Historic Ships in Britain

Britain has many historic vessels that have been preserved include HMS Belfast on the River Thames in London and the Cutty Sark also on The Thames in Greenwich. The Golden Hinde, a replica of Drake's flagship is also in the capital.
