Farringdon Station is an historic railway station in London located just outside the boundaries of the City financial district in the London Borough of Islington.
History
The original Farringdon Station opened in 1863 as part of the Metropolitan Railway, one of the world's first underground railways. The original station, Farringdon Street, was close to the present-day station and had trains to Paddington Station. It became Farringdon & High Holborn at its present location in 1922.
Over the years, the station has undergone several expansions and renovations to accommodate the growing demand for rail services into the City.
Trains
Farringdon Station is on Thameslink. There are trains to Brighton via Gatwick Airport, Rainham via Greenwich, Woolwich Arsenal, Dartford and Gravesend and Cambridge via Stevenage.
In addition, there are trains to Horsham via Redhill and Gatwick Airport, as well as services to St Albans, Sutton and Wimbledon.
There are also trains to Bedford, Luton and Peterborough.
Now a station on the Elizabeth Line, Farringdon has trains to Abbey Wood, Heathrow Airport, Maidenhead, Reading, Shenfield and London Paddington.
Tube Lines
Farringdon Underground Station is a tube station on the Circle, Hammersmith & City, and Metropolitan underground lines.
The station is in Travelcard Zone 1.
Buses
The station is convenient for several bus routes. These include the 40, 55, 63, and 341 as well as night buses.
The 40 runs from Dulwich in south London to Fleet Street via Elephant & Castle & Blackfriars Station. The 55 connects Walthamstow with Oxford Circus tube station via Old Street, Farringdon and Tottenham Court Road. The 63 bus runs from south of the river from Peckham Rye to King's Cross Station. The 341 runs from Meridian Water Station in Tottenham to Waterloo Station via Green Lanes, Angel, Sadler's Wells Theatre, Farringdon and Aldwych.
