Busy Sheffield Station in Sheffield, South Yorkshire in the north of England is a combined railway station and tram stop. It is the main point of access for visitors to this historic steel-manufacturing city.

History

The present Sheffield Station dates back to 1870. It was the fifth and last station built in the city.

The station was designed by prolific architect John Holloway Sanders, chief architect of the Midland Railway at the time, and responsible for the design of over 50 railway stations in the UK.

Since 2002, the station has undergone various refurbishments while retaining much of the original architecture.

The concourse has been improved considerably with a host of new places to eat and shop now in residence.

For a time from 2008-2012 station authorities tried to block access to the footbridge over the platforms to ticket holders only. This is no longer enforced.

Trains & Platforms

Nowadays Sheffield Station has 9 platforms, numbered 1 to 8 and 2C.

There are trains to many parts of the UK from Sheffield.

Platforms 1 and 2 have services to Huddersfield Station, Leeds via Barnsley, Cleethorpes via Doncaster, Doncaster, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, York Station in York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow Central & Aberdeen.

Platform 2c has trains to Manchester Piccadilly in Manchester via New Mills Central.

Platforms 3 & 4 has trains to Leeds, Lincoln, Adwick and Scarborough/Bridlington/Hull.

Platforms 5 has trains to London St Pancras, Derby, Norwich and Nottingham; Birmingham, Reading, Bristol, Plymouth and Penzance.

Platform 6 has departures to Derby, Birmingham, Reading, Bristol, Plymouth and Penzance; Nottingham (via Alfreton), and Liverpool Lime Street in Liverpool via Stockport Station in Stockport and Manchester Piccadilly.

Platform 7 has services for Norwich via Nottingham, Liverpool Lime Street & Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport; plus stopping services for Manchester Piccadilly via New Mills Central.

Platform 8 has trains for Liverpool Lime Street & Manchester Piccadilly via Stockport; London St Pancras via Derby; Nottingham via Alfreton.

Station Facilities

Sheffield Station has 24/7 car parking with spaces for 678 cars as well as parking for 400 bicycles at the Cycle Hub storage facility located at the station entrance (next to taxi rank).

The ticket office is open at the following times:

Monday - Friday 5 am - 10.50 pm; Saturday 5 am - 10.50 pm; Sunday 7.45 am - 11 pm.

Shops and eateries at the station include branches of Starbucks, WH Smith, M&S, Upper Crust, Burger King and Costa Coffee. There are also both ATMs and pay phones at the station.

Sheffield Tap is an historic pub at the station now with an on-site micro brewery. It is housed within the former Edwardian first-class Refreshment & Dining Rooms of the station.

There is a taxi rank just outside the main entrance. Waiting time for a cab is minimal.

Within easy walking distance from the station are Sheffield Hallam University, the Millennium Gallery and the Sheffield Winter Garden.

Buses & Trams

Local Sheffield buses that stop at the Sheaf Street/Harmer Lane include the 10a, 42 and 73 Sheffield.

The following buses stop at the nearby Pond Street stop - the 10a, 18 Sheffield, 18a Sheffield, 32, 56 Sheffield, 57, 57a, 65, 95 Sheffield, 95a Sheffield, 218 Peakline, 252 City Line, 271, 272 Sheffield's Peak Link and X7.

The Sheffield Supertram network connecting Sheffield and Rotherham stops at Sheffield Station. It is on both the Blue Route and Purple Route of the network.

The previous stop to the south is Granville Road and the next stop heading north is Fitzalan Square, not far from the National Videogame Museum.

Hotels

Fairly close to the station is the 4-star Novotel Sheffield Centre. The Leonardo Hotel Sheffield is also 4-star and offers a bar, restaurant, and a 24-hour reception. Mercure Sheffield St Paul's Hotel & Spa is a little further from the station. Facilities include a restaurant, champagne bar, sauna and indoor swimming pool.
