The interesting National Videogame Museum in Castle House on Angel Street Road in Sheffield has over 100 contemporary and historic video games as well as videogame software and hardware.

History

The museum began life as the National Videogame Arcade in Nottingham, before moving to Sheffield in 2018.

Exhibits

The museum focuses on both contemporary and historic video games. Altogether there are 100 playable video and arcade games on display. These include such classics as Dance Stage Fusion, Gun Blade and Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing.

The collections include the iconic Space Invaders which features the classic 1978 original along with 13 other versions of the game including clones, sequels, and spin-offs.

In addition, the museum features various revolving exhibitions from the collection. These have included Masayuki Uemura & the Famicom, the story of the Japanese videogame engineer, Masayuki Uemura, head of Nintendo's R&D2 department (Research and Development) and the creator of the Famicom system.

The Picture This Collection has examples of how videogames include and experiment with photography in play such as Pokemon Snap.

Hardware and consoles on display include the Atari CX-10, BBC Micro, Game Boy Advance, Magnavox Odyssey, Nintendo Switch, Pax Power Glove, PlayStation, Sailor Moon Arcade Machine, Sega Megadrive, Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Xbox and ZX Spectrum.

Admission

The museum costs £12 for adults, child £9 and concessions £10.

The nearest Sheffield Supertram network stop is Castle Square on the Blue, Purple and Yellow routes.

Sheffield Station has trains to London St Pancras, Liverpool Lime Street, Huddersfield Station, Leeds via Barnsley, Cleethorpes via Doncaster, Wakefield Westgate, Leeds, York Station in York, Newcastle, Edinburgh, Glasgow Central & Aberdeen. There are also trains from Sheffield to Piccadilly Station in Manchester and Stockport Station in Stockport.

There are buses to and from Sheffield to the spa town of Buxton in Derbyshire.

Nearby

Within easy walking distance of the museum is the Sheffield Steelworker mural, Sheffield Cathedral, the Crucible and Lyceum theatres and also the Millennium Gallery.

The National Emergency Services Museum is also less than 10 minutes on foot. A little further away is the excellent Kelham Island Museum.

In addition, Sheffield Station is 10 minutes on foot from the NVM.
