History

The museum was founded in 1879 along with Derby Central Library. It is housed in a building by Richard Knill Freeman in classic Victorian style. Over the years, it has expanded its collections and galleries to offer a wide range of exhibitions.

Joseph Wright of Derby Collection

One of the museum's most notable features is its extensive collection of works by Joseph Wright of Derby, an 18th-century painter known for his dramatic use of light and shadow. The museum holds the largest collection of his works in the world, including famous paintings such as "A Philosopher Lecturing on the Orrery."

Wright's most famous work "An Experiment on a Bird in the Air Pump" is in the National Gallery in London.

Ceramics and Porcelain

The museum has an impressive collection of Derby porcelain, dating back to the 18th century. The collection highlights the craftsmanship and artistry of the Derby porcelain factory, which was one of the leading producers of fine ceramics in England.

Tuesday to Saturday: 10 am to 5 pm.
Sundays: 12 pm to 4 pm.

Derby Station has trains to Edinburgh Waverley Station in Edinburgh via LeedsYork Station in YorkNewcastle, and Berwick-upon-Tweed.
