Pickford's House Museum, Derby
A glimpse into Georgian life - Pickford's House

Pickford's House Museum at Number 41 Friar Gate in Derby offers a glimpse into Georgian life at the preserved house of Joseph Pickford (1734-1782), a prominent architect of the time. Pickford moved in influential circles and was friends with painter Joseph Wright of Derby, potter Josiah Wedgwood, and the inventors and businessmen Matthew Boulton and John Whitehurst.

History
The house dates from 1770. Pickford designed the residence both as his family home and as a showcase for his work. The building itself is an excellent example of Georgian architecture, reflecting the elegance and symmetry typical of the era.

Exhibits
The museum's exhibits include period-accurate rooms such as a drawing room, dining room, and kitchen, all furnished to reflect the lifestyle of a prosperous Georgian family.
Additionally, the house features a fully reconstructed late Victorian laundry and a display of historical costumes, offering insights into the domestic chores and fashion of the time.
The top floor of the house has a toy theatre collection with scenes Aladdin, Little Red Riding Hood, Sleeping Beauty and Treasure Island.
Another key attraction at Pickford's House is its rotating exhibits and displays that cover various aspects of social history, including the history of hygiene, costume, and childhood.
The museum also has a range of artifacts related to Joseph Pickford's work, showcasing the tools and techniques of Georgian architecture.
