History

The present Derby Station dates back to 1839. Derby became the Headquarters of Midland Railway and the first station was one of the largest railway stations in the UK at the time. Indeed Derby was the base for Midland Railway's locomotive and carriage works.

The station was designed by the reknown railway architect Francis Thompson (1808-1895), chief architect of the North Midland Railway at the time, a company building the railway between Derby and Leeds.

The building was renovated in the 1950s by British Rail and again in the 1980s when the original Victorian station entrance and booking hall was demolished in 1985. The station clock (now in the car park) and the coats of arms of the Midland Railway were preserved and can still be seen today.

Further improvements again took place in both 2007 and 2018.

It is the busiest station in Derbyshire, and the third busiest station in the East Midlands.
