The Peace Gardens and Millennium Square in Sheffield are in front of the city's Gothic town hall. These tranquil public spaces are close to Millennium Gallery and the indoor Winter Garden. The 1930s Peace Gardens have been redeveloped with the addition of Millennium Square as part of an inner city revival project in the late 1990s.

History

The first gardens were originally laid out in 1938 and were called St Paul's Gardens after the St Paul's church demolished at the site to make way for them. However, they were soon nicknamed, somewhat ironically, the "Peace Gardens" after the Munich Agreement of that year between the British government and Nazi Germany. The name became official in the 1980s.

Features

The Peace Gardens space contains several water features and the central Goodwin Fountain in front of Sheffield Town Hall. The eight Holberry Cascades represent Sheffield's many rivers and the flow of molten steel. They are named after Samuel Holberry (1814-1842), the leader of the Sheffield Chartist Movement.

The Heart of the City project that began in 1998 added the adjacent Millennium Square with its distinctive, nine steel fountain spheres. These represent the Sheffield steel industry and the water that first powered mass production. They are entitled "Rain" by sculptor Colin Rose.

Several plaques commemorate local people killed in various conflicts including the Spanish Civil War, World War II and the Korean War. There is also a memorial to the victims of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, unveiled in 1985.
