Situated approximately 50 miles (80 km) north west of Manchester on the M61, Blackpool is one of Britain's oldest seaside resorts.
The town is 88 km north of Liverpool on the M6, and around 29 km west from Preston on the M55.
Attractions
Blackpool is known for its three piers - Central Pier, probably the most famous, North Pier and South Pier. All were constructed in the Victorian age. The oldest and longest, North Pier dates from 1863 and was built close to the railway station. Central Pier (1868) is known for its Big Wheel and arcades. South Pier (1893) has a range of fun amusements and great views over the town.
Blackpool Pleasure Beach is one of the UK's largest and most historic amusement parks, offering an exciting mix of attractions, including thrilling roller coasters such as The Big One and the country's only Nickelodeon Land, designed especially for younger visitors.
Blackpool Tower, an iconic landmark dating back to 1894, dominates the town's skyline. The tower is home to the stunning Tower Eye observation deck, the world-famous Tower Ballroom with its historic Wurlitzer organ, and the traditional Tower Circus.
Blackpool Zoo spans 32 acres of beautifully landscaped parkland and is home to more than 1,000 animals. This award-winning attraction features a diverse range of species, including elephants, gorillas, and big cats.
Other attractions in Blackpool include Sandcastle Waterpark which is the UK's largest indoor waterpark, offering a tropical atmosphere with warm sub-tropical temperatures, 18 exciting water slides, and a variety of interactive water attractions for all ages. It launched as the UK's first indoor waterpark in 1986.
Madame Tussauds Blackpool gives visitors the chance to get up close to remarkably lifelike wax figures of famous celebrities, Marvel superheroes, sporting legends, and beloved British cultural icons. It opened in 2011.
Showtown which opened as recently as 2024 is an immersive and interactive museum located in the center of the town, celebrating the Blackpool's unique heritage as Britain's capital of entertainment through engaging exhibits, stories, and hands-on experiences.
The Blackpool Illuminations are a world-famous spectacle featuring six miles of dazzling light displays, animated installations, and vibrant visual effects stretching along the town's seafront. Recognized as the world's largest free light show, the event has been a cherished British tradition since 1879, attracting millions of visitors each year and helping to extend Blackpool's tourism season well beyond the summer months into autumn and winter.
The Winter Gardens is a renowned Grade II listed entertainment, exhibition and conference complex in Blackpool. Opened in 1878, the historic 4.9-acre venue encompasses 12 unique spaces, making it one of the UK's most celebrated centers for live entertainment, cultural events, political gatherings, and dance.
Access - Getting There
Blackpool North Station is the main point of access and has onward connections with both buses and trams.
There are services from Blackpool North to Liverpool Lime Street, Manchester Piccadilly, Manchester Airport, Bolton, Preston, Wigan North Western, Salford Crescent, Deansgate, Blackburn and York Station via Leeds.
For Manchester Victoria in Manchester change at Bolton, Manchester Oxford Road, Salford Crescent or Piccadilly.
Blackpool North also has two trains a day to London Euston.
Blackpool's other station, the much less busy, Blackpool South has trains to Preston. There is no connection between the two stations so take a tram to Waterloo Road tram stop.
Blackpool Airport is near to Squires Gate Station (a 10-minute walk from the airport near St Anne's).
Buses that stop near the station or leave from the bus and tram stand at the station include the 3, 5, 5A, 6, 7, 8, 18, 11, 14, 42 and 400 services.
The 18-km long Blackpool Tramway runs between Starr Gate near the airport in Blackpool in the south to the Ferry Terminus in Fleetwood to the north. The line began in 1885 and is one of the oldest electric tramways in the world.
