List of Historic, Traditional Counties in the UK
The United Kingdom has 97 traditional, ceremonial or historic counties. These classic counties have nothing to do with local government but are useful for cultural and geographical purposes.
For example, many people whould say that the city of Bath is in the county of Somerset or even more recently Avon but for local government purposes it is actually in Bath and North East Somerset (Bathnes).
Similarly, older people living in Altrincham in the north west of England, would say they lived in Cheshire, whereas for administrative purposes, they live in the Metropolitan Borough of Trafford which is part of the Metropolitan County of Greater Manchester.
