Culzean Castle is a dramatic clifftop masterpiece and an 18th-century architectural gem designed by Robert Adam. It also has a historic connection to US President Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Located in South Ayrshire, Scotland, it blends grand Georgian style with a vast surrounding country park. The castle is perched dramatically on rugged Ayrshire cliffs overlooking the Firth of Clyde, offering clear views toward the island of Arran and Ailsa Craig.

The castle and its expansive 240-acre grounds are now one of Scotland's most popular historic attractions, offering visitors a glimpse into the country's aristocratic heritage and architectural history.

History

The site was originally occupied by a fortified tower house built in the 16th century by the Kennedy family, one of Scotland's most influential noble families.

Between 1777 and 1792, the tower house was transformed into the grand castle seen today under the direction of the renowned architect Robert Adam, commissioned by David Kennedy, the 10th Earl of Cassalis (pronounced 'Cassles'). However, neither Kennedy nor Adam lived to see the castle completely finished as both died in 1792. The estate and house passed to Captain Archibald Kennedy, a wealthy naval captain in America, who in turn left it to his son, also called Archibald, who secured the family's financial situation and also became the 1st Marquess of Ailsa into the bargain.

The Kennedy family can trace their ancestry back to Robert the Bruce and are one of the oldest clans in Scotland. On a darker note, the clan were at times involved in both smuggling and the slave trade both of which helped to increase their considerable wealth in the past.

Adam's elegant neoclassical design incorporated the older structure while creating a magnificent residence overlooking the Firth of Clyde. Robert Adam (1728-1792) was also responsible for several notable stately homes and other projects in the UK including Harewood House, Kedleston Hall, Kenwood House, Lupton House, Newby Hall, Nostell Priory, Osterley Manor and Saltram House as well as Pulteney Bridge in Bath.

In 1945, the Kennedy family gifted the castle and its grounds to the National Trust for Scotland, ensuring their preservation for future generations (and to avoid huge inheritance tax).

Eisenhower & Culzean

Culzean Castle has a unique connection to General Dwight D. Eisenhower, the Supreme Allied Commander during the Second World War and later the 34th President of the United States.

In recognition of his leadership and his role in the Allied victory, the Scottish people presented Eisenhower with the use of a luxury apartment in the castle in 1945.

Located on the top floor, the apartment became his private retreat, and he visited Culzean Castle on four occasions, once while President, to enjoy its peaceful surroundings and dramatic views over the Firth of Clyde. Today, the Eisenhower Apartment has been preserved as a museum, displaying personal memorabilia, photographs, and gifts that commemorate his life and his ties to Scotland.

Highlights

Some highlights of the castle include The Oval Staircase, Robert Adam's architectural masterpiece, a soaring, elegant staircase that forms the dramatic centerpiece of the interior. Adam's innovative design is also evident in The Round Drawing Room, a beautiful circular room with panoramic windows overlooking the Firth of Clyde.

The main house also has one of Britain's largest collections of military flintlock pistols and an impressive display of swords, along with period furniture, paintings, and other family treasures.

The Country Park estate extends far beyond the castle itself, with woodland walks, a deer park, formal gardens, the Swan Pond, secluded beaches, and over 40 historic buildings and follies to explore.

The 18th century Walled Garden has been beautifully restored with seasonal flowers, fruit, and vegetables. It consists of two parts separated by a wall - the pleasure garden and the kitchen garden.

The Adventure Cove & Wild Woodland at the Swan Pond are ideal for families with children to enjoy these natural adventure playgrounds. Have fun on the climbing walls, towers, treehouses, slides, the mazehouse and zip slides.

Culzean is off the A719, 12 miles south of Ayr and 4 miles west of Maybole.

From Glasgow Central trains run to Ayr (about 50 minutes) and Maybole (change at Ayr).

From Glasgow by bus take the X77 to Ayr Bus Station and then the 60 bus towards Girvan and get off at Glenside. From here, however, it is still a 40 minute walk (2 miles). A taxi from Maybole may be the best bet.

Renting a car is another option for getting around this part of Scotland. By car the castle is just over an hour southwest of Glasgow on the M77 and A77.
